How can I do something like if option a is selected in the join form drop down menu, textfield B will be a compulsory field? If option a is not selected, textfield B will not be a compulsory field.

This facility is not supported in default framework. You can develop a custom join form for this.

You mean I can edit the form from an html editor and save it manually but keep the form action and form elements names?

That won't work. The form has to be build separately and it should process all the inputs and store to the database and do all the things that is done by default dolphin when an user joins.
